Understanding German News

Why are news important?

Do you want to be able to switch on the TV and actually understand what's moving Germany?

Think how cool it would be, if you could check the top news, interesting events or get some ideas for small or big talks with your German colleagues, neighbors or friends?

Problem: They speak so fast.

It would be great to know what's going on, if they'd not speak so fast and use so many new words. It makes no sense then to keep guessing from the pictures what's going on while actually not understanding anything.

It doesn't have to be so frustrating any more.

You don't have to be a fruent speaker to try this

There are 3 programs for German learners (by Deutsche Welle) that will help you start understanding German news much before you are a fluent speaker or have reached C2 level.

1. TOP-THEMA MIT VOKABELN

Start at level B1 (Intermediate German)

You have to have some basic understanding of German but by far not being fluent in order to start working your way through popular topics like Flüchtlinge, VW-Skandal or Oktoberfest-Mode.

Listen to the Audio, download the manuscipt and do some exercises to make sure you understood the topic and the new vocabulary. Not to overwhelm you, a new topic comes up twice a week.

2. VIDEO-THEMA

Start at level B2 (Upper-Intermediate)

A short video commentary discusses a current topic and help broaden your cultural understanding and vocabulary with subtitles and downloadable exercises.

Click on the picture to see the newest video topic.

3. SLOWLY SPOKEN NEWS

Start at level B2 (Upper-Intermediate)

Every day (Monday-Friday) you can listen to the news - spoken extra slower. If still have difficulties following because of the specific terms used, you can read the text or check new terms in the News-Glossary.

A good exercise that will help improve you pronunciation and speech speed is to try to read the news together with the speaker.

MUCH MORE THAN NEWS

Deutsche Welle offers multiple learning programs and shows that are made especially for German learners, so if you are curios to learn more about everyday life, culture, music, technology, economy or anything you are interested in, just feel free to explore the website and get inspired by the thousends of topics.

Stayed informed and keep the fun while learning! Dilyana
